Profile & Performance

India has been an important destination for engineering goods. The country’s total export of engineering goods and services was US$ 15925 million in 2004-05. The share of engineering exports in the total manufacturing sector exports of India increased from 13.6% in 1995 – 96 to 20.9% in 2005-06.

West Bengal has traditionally been a very important and large producer of engineering goods.:

Policies & Plans
Various policies have been undertaken to promote the engineering industry. Promotion of Engineering products, projects, management & technical consultancy are given prime importance. Different schemes have also been formulated for boosting this sector. Duty Exemption Scheme enables duty free import of inputs required for export promotion. Duty Remission Scheme enables post export replenishment/remission of duty on inputs used in the export product. Duty Entitlement Passbook Scheme allows drawback of import charges on inputs used in the export product. Infrastructure, R&D, Modernization all these areas are to be upgraded according to the policy undertaken. Focus area programmers are also undertaken emphasizing the countries of CIS, Africa, Latin American Countries and ASEAN countries.
